Petition

Do we already have the text defined for the petition we talked about circulating at the 9/11 meeting ? If so, do you think it makes sense to include the same text in an online petition with a link from our NAIL website ? There is a place that does free petition hosting which we could use (http://www.petitiononline.com/petition.html).

Concerned about free online petition services

Pete: I also found a free petition service at gopetition.com. I'm a little concerned about these services however. Based on the little research I did about trying to create a petition module for our site, I learned there are some requirements for creating valid petitions that raise privacy issues. I wish I could say "We have a petition module!" because that would be the best solution for us. But if we do go for a petition service, we have to make sure that people who are submitting their names and addresses will not have this information harvested for marketing and other purposes by some 3rd party out there. I'm not sure there is a free service that will provide that.

Speaking for myself, I would only feel comfortable signing my name and putting my address and other contact information on the web via a secure (https) connection to an organization that I could be sure would not be selling my info. Unfortunately, setting this up for MRG would be a big challenge (involves secure connection/authentication, contact management piece w database support, signature verification, and making sure the whole thing meets the requirements of a valid petition).

Who will receive the petitions?

I like this petition and agree that gathering signatures for the petition is a good idea.

However, it's not clear to me to whom the petitions will be submitted? Is it the SJWC? The County? I think that needs to made more clear.

I was going to print the petition out this morning and have some folks sign it but started to think about the questions people would ask. Number one was, who is this going to?
